Renowned epoch-maker and literary giant Krushna Prasad Mishra was born in Narsinghpur sashan of Brahmapur under Ganjam district. His father was Ananta Mishra. Krushna Prasad excelled in every sphere of Odia prose literature. He was very popular as a Professor of Philosophy.
Krushna Prasad started his literary career from writing essays in 1956. In the early days, mature outlook and language style was reflected in his three novels ‘Mrugatrushna’ (1957), ‘Simhakati’ (1959) and ‘Nepathye’ (1960). With the demonstration of Indian culture, the psychology of the chaotic and confused youth has been portrayed in ‘Mrugatrushna’. It is a document of the self-centred modern man who is bent upon working under the dictates of his instinct. There is a lot of sarcasm against the fall of values, the capitalist system, superstitions and social evils.
‘Nepathye’ depicts the struggle of the youths, their confusion and their efforts to make a living against the backdrop of the contemporary environment. The stories of the novels are based on social discourse, but the psychological analysis of the characters has gained special prominence. The themes of Gandhian thought, communist philosophy, Karmism of Indian culture, luck, reincarnation are embodied in a very simple, sublime, metaphorical, pictorial language with dramatic setting. Krushna Prasad stopped writing novels and concentrated on storytelling for over three decades.
The number of stories is more than two hundred. Besides a compilation of his best stories, ‘Shrestha Galpa’ (1993), his other short stories compilations are: ‘Mounavati Ratri’ (1963), ‘Naigra O Devjani’ (1968), ‘Aranya O Upabana’ (1970), ‘Bhrugu Samhita’ (1973), ‘Nijaku Dayee Kari’ (1975), ‘Paschima’ (1978), ‘Sanatana Ojha Gale Kuade’ (1981),' Chitrita Chadara’ (1983), ‘Parbatarohana’ (1983), ‘Manika Sandhana’ (1989) and ‘Daffodil O Gangashiuli’ (1991).
The backdrops of the stories are from Indian and Western cultures and customs, and from all the socio-economic-cultural crises of the contemporary world to the regional or local life and problems and religious beliefs. His dramatic storytelling, mysterious atmosphere and eloquent pictorial language have made his stories compelling and intellectual. The title stories appear to be more powerful.
The ‘Canada Diary’ is a travelogue of different taste, a comparative discussion of Eastern and Western cultures. Besides, his books on philosophy, literature and culture carry speak eloquently of the writer’s scholarship, depth in scriptures and his cultural perfection.
