Anant Prasad Panda, one of the leading figures in modern Odia literature, was born on July 18, 1906 in the village of Kalyani under Bahanaga in Baleshwar district. His father's name was Ramakant and his mother was Gehlamani.
Although Mr. Panda was a high-ranking official (in the Cooperative Department) by profession, by passion he indulged in wide-ranging literary creations. He excelled in short stories, novels, poems, plays, translations, essays and travelogues. His short story books include ‘Truna Guchha’, ‘Sabhyatara Tale’, ‘Manashi Bhuta Barmaja’, ‘Naisha Sundari’ and ‘Yugarahasya’. Among his novels are ‘Bhagyachakra’, ‘Nua Dunia’, ‘Kuli’ and ‘Mukta Akashara Bihanga’. Panda’s poetry books include ‘Niharika’, ‘Jhankar’, ‘Mo Kavita’ and ‘Kavitara Bilapa’. The plays and one-act plays include ‘Tulasi’, ‘Yuga Rahasya’, ‘Satyayuga’ and ‘Tarabai’. His creation in the field of children's literature is ‘Prakruti’, a compilation of stories. His travelogues include ‘Paschatya Anubhuti’, ‘Diaryru Keteka Prustha’, ‘Buddha Khol’, ‘Chilika Bakshe’ and ‘Badadina Chhutira Adya Charidina’. Panda’s translated works include ‘Omar Chayanika’ and ‘Yogabashistha Ramayana’. His autobiography 'Mo Jeevan Smruti' and ‘Mora Kendrapada Smruti’ and 'Ganjam Anubhuti' present a vivid picture of life in society and culture.
Although the creations of Anant Prasad Panda touched various aspects of literature, he is prominently known as a storyteller. His works reflect cooperative ideals inherited from his profession. His creations are valuable not only in terms of literature, but also in terms of establishing social norms.
