Pandit Prabhakar Mishra

(1886-1953)

Born in 1886 in Singhapur, a village near Gadamadhupur in the Jajpur district, Pandit Prabhakar Mishra came from a respected, cultured family. He was the youngest of the four sons of Shri Artatrana Satpathy Vidya Nidhi – Banshidhar, Haladhar, Damodar and Prabhakar. After being adopted by his uncle, Bidyadhar Mishra, the ancestral priest of the Madhupur royal family, he took the Mishra surname.

From an early age he learned worship rituals and the basics of Sanskrit. With financial support from the King of Madhupur, he pursued higher Sanskrit studies in Calcutta, Nadia and Puri.

Academic Titles
- Smruti Tirtha – awarded by the Calcutta Sanskrit Exam Board (1910)
- Byakaran Tirtha – awarded by the Bihar-Odisha Sanskrit Association (1919)
- Smruti Ratna – conferred by the Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha, Puri (1937)

He was a deep scholar of Paninian grammar and, for that, he earned the title Smruti Ratna.

Pandit Prabhakar Mishra passed away on the auspicious day of Gosthastami in the holy month of Kartik in 1953.
