Udaynath Sadangi, a well-known journalist, children's writer and successful translator of ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ (Tamakakanka Kutira), was born on March 16, 1905 in the village of Srirampur in Jagat Singhpur district. His father was Bhikari Sadangi and his mother was Pasori Sadangi. He joined the non-cooperation movement at Gandhiji's call when he was a school student, and at the behest of Gopbandhu, he stayed at the Alka Ashram to train in spinning and weaving, as well as training young men and women dedicated to patriotism in the nearby areas. Although he later attended Satyabadi Bana Bidyalaya at to continue his education, and later, the Bhaktamadhu Vidyapeeth in Cuttack, he could not complete his matriculation due to compelling circumstances. Later, he had a stint as a proof-reader at the Utkal Sahitya Press, founded by Bishwanath Kar.

Udaynath Sadangi worked with the Samaj in 1939-40 as a proof-reader. He was printer and publisher of the paper for 63 years. He was also editor of the state’s premier newspaper for two years. He skilfully served there as News Editor till his retirement.

Udaynath Sadangi was mainly a children's writer. His special works are ‘Pilanka pain Odishar Itihasa Katha, Bharatara Itihasa Katha, Paatha Kusuma and Prathama Sahitya.

His prose works include books such as Pariraija, Emananku Jaanirasha, Telalunara Samsaara, Bichitra Pashu, Biluaananaara baahaghara, Minira Manakatha, Aadibasi Katha, Tuukumushi, Jahnamamu, Chakachaka Bhaunri, Kathakabita, Jala-rakshasa and Harabhainka Gharabahuda. His works for children on science include, Aama Graha Upagraha (5 volumes), Bana-jangalara Jeevajantu (4 volumes), Jaaniba Katha (4 volumes), Jalajantu series (3 volumes) and Bichitra Manav series (5 volumes).

Mr. Sadangi was adept at translation and his contribution to Odia literature in this field the Odia translation of Hariyet Sta's famous book ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ (Tama Kakaanka Kutira) and Sir Arthur  Kannatail’s ‘Valley of Fears’ (Marana Duare). ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ was based on slavery in American and was especially well-received by Odia readers in the language form. Arabya Rajni, Alibaba, Gautam Buddha and Sindvad are the other unique works of translation by Mr. Sadangi.

Above all, his best work is his autobiography Gandi Majaraj’nka Sishya (Disciple of Gandhi Maharaj).

Mr. Sadangi has been honoured with awards by by the Prajatantra Prachar Samiti, Odisha Sahitya Akademi, Utkal Pathak Sangsad and Gokarnika Sahitya Samaj for his literary achievements.
