Apurba Ranjan Rai, a well-known critic of the modern Odia literary world, was born in Bhadrak district to father Binod Bihari Roy and mother Nishamani Devi. ‘Vishwa Barenya Swami Vivekananda’, ‘Mahapurusha SriRamakrishna Paramahansa’, ‘Mamatamayee Shardadevi’, ‘Acharya Harihar’, ‘Saraswat Purusha Kantakabi Laxmikanta’, ‘Kuntala Kumari: Biography and Talent’, ‘Ketoti Alibha Shikha’ are the biographical books written by him. ‘Kabita Biksha’, ‘Adhunika Kabitara Digdarshan’, ‘Kantakabi Srushti Samikaha’, ‘Sahitya Suchiru Keteka’ are a few of his books on literary criticism. He has written books for children titled ‘Tiki Phula’ and ‘Chaka Chaka Bhaunri’, leaving behind his footprints in children's literature. He was a good organiser and orator.
