Krupasagar Sahoo, a leading name in Odia language and literature of the 19^th and 20^th centuries, was born in the village Mathkargola in Kamakshanagar of Dhenkanal district. He was a worthy child of father Shibacharan Sahu and mother Sita Devi.

Krupasagar completed his high school education at Mathakargola High School and graduation in Ravenshaw College. After post-graduation in political science from Utkal University, he joined Maharaja Purnachandra College in 1975 as a professor. He passed the All India Administrative Service Examination in 1978 and joined the Indian Railways Traffic Service (IRTS). He retired in 2012.

Krupasagar served the Indian Railways for thirty-four years and during this tenure he was posted in various zones of Indian Railways and had the good fortune to draw inspiration from his experiences with people at work and life in general. More than fifty of his short stories have Indian Railways as the theme. His style of subtle humour has earned him reputation in Odia literature. Nature in all its manifestations, animals, birds, and the common man are also some of the recurring themes in his writings. He has thirteen short story collections, six novels and many poetry collections to his credit. Many of his stories have been translated into English and other major Indian languages and have been appreciated by his readers.

In his student life, he came under the influence of Gangadhar Meher's poetry and composed a long poem — a semi-epic — under the title ‘Nirjharini’ which brought him popularity. While a student at Ravenshaw, his writings were published in the Western Hostel mouthpiece Urmi and other magazines like Meenabazar and Sourabh. His first modern poem, ‘Samukara Kakshachyuti’ was published in the literature page of the daily Kalinga.

He won the Parija Cup with the first prize for his story’ ‘Jyoti O Tamasa’ in the inter-hostel story competition. Mr. Sahu, who was particularly interested in writing poetry and children’s literature in the early stages of his literary career, later started writing stories and novels.

His first collection of poems, ‘Upare Pharcha Akash’ was published in 1990. This was followed by the publication of a collection of poems, ‘Tale Basumata’ (1991), a collection of children's poems, ‘Hia Te Te’ (1992) and ‘Naa Mo Relagadi’ (1994). The first collection of short stories, ‘Jyoti O Tamsa’, was published in 1990.

 Krupasagar revealed the reality of life in all his works. The problems faced in the society, the challenges created for both humans and plants are reflected throughout. They also reflect the mentality of the modern man moving forward, leaving behind his foundation.

Collection of short stories include ‘kahani 1998’ (1998), ‘Aranyara Ajagara O Anyanya Kahani’ (2000), ‘Hansadhwani’ (2002), ‘Kahani 2005’ (2005), 'Shua Kahe Sharilo' (2008), ‘Gadjat Gapa’ ( 2009), ‘Krupasagar Sahunka Relagapa’ (2011), ‘Kain Pokharire Prema' (2011) and 'Krupasagar Classic' (2013). His novels including ‘Sesha Sharata’ (2006), ‘Shrabanara Sakala’ (2009) and ‘Jharapatrare Jhada’ (2012) have established him in the arena of Odia fiction.

Human empathy, the captivating beauty of Nature and the realities in this age of globalisation have been effectively manifested in all his creations. His stories and novels are outstanding in their theatrical narrative and metaphorical presentation.

Publication of his books in languages other than Odia has broadened the sphere of readership of his works at the national level. These books include:  English– ‘Lily Land’ (Collection of Poems, 1995), ‘Oranges from Nagpur’ (story collection, 2006) and ‘Chilika - A Love Story’; Bengali– ‘Aranyara Ajagara’ (story compilation, 2000), ‘Hansadhwani’ (story collection, 2003) and ‘Sesha Sarata’ (novel - 2013), and Hindi– ‘Hansadhwani’ (story collection - 2006) and ‘Sesha Sarata’ (novel - 2009).

Mr. Sahu, who edited the literary magazine ‘Pratibheshi’ from1997 to 2000 and again from 2006 to 2009, has been editing his own magazine ‘Kusumita’ since 2001. He has won the ‘Prabashi Bandhu Samman’ Kolkata (2001), ‘Akhilachakra Samman’ (2006), the ‘Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award’ for his novel ‘Sesha Sharata’ (2009), ‘Priyapatra Galpa Samman’ (2009), ‘Punarnava Samman’ (2012), ‘Sat Sahitya Samman’ (2012, ‘Tapaswini Samman’, ‘Bengaluru’ (2012) and ‘Mallika’, Kolkata (2013).

At present Krupasagar Sahu lives with his family in Bhubaneswar.
