Pandit Gopinatha Kara

Famous Odia poet of the 19th-20th century, Pandit Gopinath Kar, was born into a Brahmin family in the village of Mulbasanta in Cuttack district. He is believed to have lived between 1870 and 1930. Pandit Gopinath has translated many Sanskrit Puranas into Odia in a style that follows 14 letters in each line. Most of the Puranas published by Arunodaya Press, Cuttack are his works. In addition to the translations, the poet also has his original creations. One of these is ‘Bichitra Bilanka’. This is a rhyming poetic form of Sarala Das’s ‘Bilanka Ramayana’ aimed at dramatization. He has also two other publications titled ‘Akrura Boli’ and ‘Namaratna Chautisha’ which contain lyrical poems and prayers.
