Shree Gopal Das

Playwright Gopal Das was born in Palasinha village of Pattamundai in Cuttack district. Following the footprints of his father Kanhai Das, who had a Jatra (open air theatre) group, he could become a successful music and dance teacher. He could also become a good actor and Jatra director by dint of his commitment to this performing art. He set up his own troop of artists in 1911. His captivating style of presentation had caught the imagination of the audience which made him more popular, even beyond the borders of the state. It was the result of his efforts to introduce popular reforms, the fusion of modern musical instruments with the traditional instruments along with introduction attractive attires and ornaments. Involvement of seasoned artists, Infusion of popular local nuances with classical and Odissi styles of music were the other reasons that captivated the audience.  The new approach influenced and enlarged his audience.

He staged his own books—nearly 70 books—like Ranga Sabha, Kansa Janma, Sweta Basanta, Jayanta Jayapal, Danav Leela, Kanchi Kaveri, Karna Badha, Janubhagna, Rukmini Bibha, Sita Bibaha, Rama Banabasa and Dushmanta Shakuntala etc. which had perfect artistic coordination and which proves his understanding of dramatics. Besides he had written some farcical plays that highly entertained the people. In 1926, he was awarded by the Commissioner for an emotional play that he staged at Barabati of Cuttack. His theatre group was active till 1937.
